    CB antenna adapter for garmin

Post  Darkside Kennels on Mon Feb 04, 2013 9:18 pm

Does anyone know what kind of adapter you would have to use to run a garmin off a CB whip? Or is it possible to run a huge VHF whip that would be way longer than the little truck mount whip garmin sells?

dont forget when running the long antennas with the marine band radios you run a good chance of slowly killing the 220/320 when keyin up over the radio. the two units run on close tot eh same feq. and te 20-100 watts will fry the garmin.

Yeah sounds like a good idea. Im going to see if I can get the specifications of their VHF whips, but their antenna is almost three times as long as garmins mag mount. Looks like a better deal.

Garmin told me they have to be at least 6 feet away from a brodcasting VHF antenna. Already fried one up. It still worked fine but the range was cut down to about three hundred yards.

yeah exactly not worth cooking it. And they want 10$ just for the end that screws into the garmin. Its cheaper just to buy one than try to make it

I think the hand held’ s are 1 watt or 5 watts, I can’t remember for sure. the truck can be set to 5 or 25watts or something similar. Yes the hand held can still effect the Garmin but it would be a slow fry because it lower power. To minimize your chance of effecting the Garmin the best thing you can do while using the hand held is, point the Garmin and its antenna toward the ground and point behind you, then key up the hand held to talk. Be sure to point the handhelds antenna up as most would do to increase the range.

Also, i think i read on the Alphas review that they changed the freq. the unit receives on so you should not have to worry about the marine band radios with the Alpha.

About time to make an upgrade to change the 320's also I would think.
